💡 What Is Effective Altruism?

Effective Altruism (EA) is a global movement and way of thinking that uses evidence and reason to identify the most effective ways to improve the world—and acts on that knowledge.

It’s not just about doing good. It’s about doing the most good with the time, skills, and resources we have.

Whether through career paths, donations, or community action, EA helps us focus on high-impact solutions to humanity’s most urgent and neglected problems.

🌍 Introduction to Effective Altruism

Effective Altruism (EA) is a global movement that uses reason and evidence to figure out how to help others as much as possible—and then takes action based on that understanding.

Many of us want to make a difference. But good intentions aren’t always enough. EA asks:
👉 Which actions actually help the most?

Why Impact Matters

Imagine donating $50,000 to train a guide dog for one person. That same amount could fund 500–1,000 cataract surgeries, restoring sight to hundreds.
Effective altruism is about making decisions that lead to the greatest positive impact.

💡 Core Principles of EA

  • Reason & Evidence
Use critical thinking and data—not just emotion—to guide action.

  • Impartiality
Every life has equal value, no matter their location, species, or even the time they live (present or future).

  • Cause Prioritization
    Focus on problems that are:

    • Important – Big in scale or urgency

    • Tractable – Solvable with current resources

    • Neglected – Not enough people are working on them

🌱 Priority Areas in Effective Altruism

  1. Global Health & Poverty
(e.g., malaria prevention, cash transfers to those in extreme poverty)

  2. Animal Welfare
(e.g., ending factory farming, reducing suffering for billions of animals)

  3. Longtermism & Existential Risks
(e.g., AI safety, climate resilience, pandemic preparedness)

🤝 How You Can Get Involved

Effective altruism isn’t only about donations. You can:

  • Choose a career that does the most good (80,000 Hours)

  • Support highly effective charities (GiveWell)

  • Volunteer, advocate, or organize events
